Uncommon Intracranial Artery Dissection as a Cause of Ischemic Stroke

Abstract

|
Background: Intracranial internal carotid artery (ICA) dissection is an uncommon cause of cerebral infarction, compared with the dissection of the ICA’s cervical portion. Moreover, in elderly patients with stroke, intracranial artery dissection was seldom reported as a cause of stroke.
Case Report: We describe two elderly patients with intracranial artery dissection at unusual site which is preceded by a trivial head trauma. 3D CT angiography was performed to verify dissection in both patients.
Conclusion: Clinicians should be aware of the possibility of artery dissection also in elderly patient, and CT angiography could be a less invasive and fair diagnostic method.
